Only slightly peripheral to this topic: may I recommend to you—and maybe your class—Polio: An American Story by David M. Mao: The Unknown Story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday. I viewed the "Whatever Happened to Polio" exhibit at The Smithsonian National Museum of American History during its 2005/2006 tour, and I was able to examine an actual iron lung, an daunting apparatus indeed. As the American Experience (PBS) documentary 'The Polio Crusade' presented, and Dr. 'Polio: An American Story' captures the climate of 1950's America, frames the cultural history of polio, tells a scientific suspense story and offers a look into the largest charitable army in the nation.
